What will happen if I don't wear my hearing aids?

Population Aging: A Global Phenomenon

Population aging is occurring worldwide due to declining birth rates and longer life expectancy. In 2022, Thailand ranked second in ASEAN for an aging society, just behind Singapore.

Interestingly, while the overall Thai population is decreasing, the number of elderly people is rising rapidly. As shown in the graph, the trend indicates that over the next 20 years, Thailand’s total population will decline from 66 million to 60 million, while the elderly population will increase from 13 million to 19 million.

Age-Related Hearing Loss in the Elderly

Most elderly individuals experience age-related hearing loss, often mishearing words or misunderstanding conversations. The onset and progression vary due to the natural aging of the body and sensory organs. While hearing loss is not usually life-threatening, it can significantly affect communication and may require hearing aids to improve hearing.

Many older adults avoid frequent hospital visits and hearing tests, leading them to resist using hearing aids. However, untreated hearing loss can worsen over time, potentially causing permanent hearing damage. In the long term, it may contribute to cognitive decline, as the brain receives less auditory stimulation.

Studies show that people with hearing loss experience 30–40% faster brain degeneration compared to those with normal hearing. This is because the brain must work harder to understand sounds, relying on long-term memory to compensate. Other associated risks include anxiety, depression, and vascular conditions such as cerebral artery stenosis, stroke from high blood lipids, and hypertension.
