Basic Knowledge You Should Know About Hearing Aids

What Is a Hearing Aid?

A hearing aid is a small sound-amplifying device designed for individuals with hearing impairments. It consists of electronic components such as a microphone, speaker, and amplifier. Today, hearing aids come in various styles and have greatly improved in quality. Mimitakara hearing aids are developed and manufactured jointly by DTM International Group of Japan and Yuan Hao Energy Group, a professional manufacturer. They are certified not only by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, known for strict standards, but also hold EU CE Medical Class II certification and are registered with the U.S. FDA. Mimitakara is the sole manufacturer and retailer of hearing aids in Taiwan and the first in Asia certified under Made for iPhone (MFi), offering cloud-based remote adjustments. Their rechargeable models include the Goodhearing series. Additionally, senior citizens with social security coverage in Taiwan can receive certain hearing aids for free, including in-ear and behind-the-ear models, up to 12,500 TWD per ear, with eligibility for a new device every three years.

Are There Other Ways to Claim a Free Hearing Aid?

You can receive a free hearing aid through benefits provided by social security and the National Health Security Office (NHSO) under Sections 33 and 39. Individuals with hearing loss, including auditory nerve degeneration or deafness, can visit a doctor to have their hearing assessed and obtain a medical certificate recommending the use of a hearing aid. With the doctor’s certificate, you can purchase a hearing aid from a hospital or authorized hearing aid store. The store will issue a receipt, which you can submit to social security for reimbursement. Before claiming the benefit, it is recommended to check with social security regarding the exact coverage. According to social security regulations, you can receive up to 12,500 THB per ear for free hearing aids, including both behind-the-ear and in-the-ear models.

Criteria and Conditions for Claiming Hearing Aids for Social Security Beneficiaries

Indications for the use of hearing aids for insured persons (Social Security)
Bilateral hearing loss with residual hearing in the better ear after completion of medication or surgery. The reason for the need for hearing aids must be specified in one of the following ways:
It cannot be treated with medication or surgery. There are contraindications to surgery. The treating physician has determined that surgery is not beneficial, or the patient refuses surgery.
Sudden sensorineural hearing loss after continuous medication treatment for more than 100 days.
Hearing loss can hinder communication, daily living, or reduce quality of life.
Hearing loss hinders the development of language and speech skills, or multiple disabilities.

Criteria and conditions for claiming hearing aids under Social Security
The better side must have an average Air Conduction Threshold of 500, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz equal to or greater than 40 decibels.
Bilateral hearing loss

Reimbursement of medical expenses for each type of hearing aid
Analog box hearing aid	7,000 baht per machine
Digital box-type hearing aid	9,000 baht per machine
Behind-the-ear digital hearing aid	12,000 baht per side
Digital in-the-ear hearing aids	12,500 baht per side
Digital bone conduction hearing aid	12,500 baht per side

(This price includes medical service fees of 3,000 baht.)

What to prepare for those who wish to claim hearing aids from Social Security
A medical certificate stating that a hearing aid should be worn.
Copy of hearing test results
Copy of hearing treatment
A copy of your national ID card with a certified true copy signature
Receipt for hearing aids that need to be reimbursed

Customers must pay the full amount upfront and then submit a reimbursement claim to the Social Security Office where they are registered.

Criteria and Conditions for Claiming Hearing Aids for Social Security Beneficiaries:

Hearing aids fall under the category of prosthetic devices and medical treatment equipment for cases involving partial or total loss of organ function. To be eligible, the claimant must be a registered social security beneficiary under Sections 33 or 39.

Eligibility requires:

Continuous contributions for at least 3 consecutive months, or
Contributions totaling at least 3 months within the past 15 months prior to the month in which medical treatment is requested.

A new hearing aid can be claimed only if: * The previous device has been in use for at least 3 years, and * It has been inspected and confirmed that the device is no longer functional or is unsuitable for the user’s level of hearing loss.
