The Story of OTC Hearing Aids

How We Started
Two out of three people over the age of 60 face hearing loss challenges, yet the number of people actually using hearing aids is far lower than the number who truly need them. Traditional hearing aids are not only expensive but also require frequent adjustments by specialists, which discourages many users. The founder of Mimitakara decided to break this dilemma by applying cloud-based SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) technology. This allows users to adjust volume through a mobile app or let the hearing aid “self-fit” using data for the most suitable settings. This innovative business model not only reduces after-sales service costs but also enhances compatibility and intelligence, making it easier for users to enjoy the beauty of sound.

The founder’s determination was driven by his love for his younger sister, who was born with hearing impairment and faced many inconveniences since childhood. “She was always beautiful and quiet, which made everyone think she was simply well-behaved—until we discovered her auditory nerve was underdeveloped. Seeing her struggle from such a young age made me wonder how much hearing aids could really be improved,” he said.

Before founding Mimitakara, the founder produced hearing aids for international brands. During that time, he obtained patents for developing “rechargeable hearing aids,” promoting eco-friendly and more convenient solutions. At the end of 2008, he decided to quit all subcontracting businesses and fully dedicate himself to hearing aid research, development, and manufacturing. He also traveled to Australia to seek advice from Harvey Dillon, a leading audiology researcher, who gave him a profound insight: “Only users themselves best understand their hearing condition, and hearing aids will eventually move toward self-fitting!” Inspired by these words, he decided to adopt cloud-based services.

Mimitakara’s commitment goes beyond developing and manufacturing customized, high-priced hearing aids sold only in hearing centers. It also focuses on affordable over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids for customers. These OTC devices connect through the cloud, allowing users to communicate with audiologists via messages or calls. Once audiologists adjust the parameters, customers can press “confirm” to apply the changes. A satisfaction survey then ensures service quality.

“With reduced service costs, the price is only half that of traditional hearing aids!” he explained. In the Taiwan market, Mimitakara has already entered many pharmacies and gradually attracted hearing centers to recommend Mimitakara as a complement to expensive customized devices. This lowers the barrier for first-time hearing aid users. The founder hopes to help more people enjoy the beauty of sound—just like his sister.
