Indications:
Hearing aids are indicated for insured individuals who have bilateral hearing loss and retain residual hearing in the better ear after completing medical or surgical treatment. The necessity for a hearing aid must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • The hearing loss cannot be treated with medication or surgery, or there are contraindications for surgery, or the treating physician determines that surgery would not be beneficial, or the patient refuses surgery.

  • Sudden sensorineural hearing loss that persists after more than 100 days of continuous medical treatment.

  • Hearing loss that hinders communication, daily activities, or reduces quality of life.

  • Hearing loss that interferes with speech and language development, or is accompanied by other disabilities.

 

Guidelines and Conditions for Reimbursement (Social Security):

  • The better ear must have an average air conduction threshold at 500, 1,000, and 2,000 Hz of ≥ 40 dB.

  • The insured person must have hearing loss in both ears.

Criteria and Conditions for Claiming Hearing Aids for Social Security Insured Persons

Hearing aids fall under the category of prosthetic devices and medical treatment equipment for cases of loss or impairment of bodily functions or parts. To be eligible for these benefits, the claimant must be a Social Security insured person under Section 33 or Section 39.

Eligibility requires:

  • Contribution payments for at least 3 consecutive months, or

  • Contribution payments totaling at least 3 months within the past 15 months prior to the month in which medical treatment is requested.

Claiming a New Hearing Aid A new hearing aid can be claimed only if the current device has been in use for at least 3 yearsa nd has been evaluated to be non-functional or unsuitable for the user’s level of hearing loss.
