Curious? Here’s how you can extend the lifespan of your hearing aids.

Daily Maintenance and Care

Previously, we discussed how hearing aids can help individuals with hearing loss improve their hearing. But what happens if you don’t take proper care of your hearing aids?

Let’s look at the consequences.

If your hearing aids accumulate earwax, dirt, and bacteria, it can make your ear canal more prone to infections.

Additionally, if the vent or air passage of the hearing aid becomes clogged, it can cause the device to produce little or no sound, significantly affecting its performance.

Therefore, to ensure your hearing aids function efficiently and last a long time, it is essential to regularly maintain and care for them properly.

Please pay attention to the following tips for proper hearing aid care and maintenance.

Things You Should NOT Do with Your Hearing Aids

Moisture:
Hearing aids should not come into contact with water or sweat. Avoid exposing them to humidity.

Heat:
Do not use a hair dryer, oven, microwave, or direct sunlight to dry your hearing aids, as excessive heat can cause serious damage.

Regular Hearing Aid Maintenance

  • Regular Hearing Aid Maintenance

Clean your hearing aids daily using a soft cloth or cotton pad. Use a soft brush to gently remove earwax or debris from the sound outlet and wax filter. If there is excessive or oily earwax, consult your hearing aid center for thorough cleaning. The hearing aid casing can be disinfected using a cotton pad moistened with 75% alcohol.

If you have middle ear inflammation or discharge, do not wear your hearing aids during this period to prevent worsening the infection. Moisture can corrode and damage the device.

Before bathing or washing your hair, always remove your hearing aids to prevent water from entering. After bathing, wait until your ear canal is completely dry before putting them back on.

Replace the battery regularly with high-quality hearing aid batteries. When not in use, remove the battery and store the device in a tightly sealed container to prevent battery leakage and corrosion from friction.

Do not wear your hearing aids while applying makeup or styling your hair, as cosmetic or hair products can clog the ventilation openings. Avoid sweat exposure as well.

Keep hearing aids away from direct sunlight, hair dryers, ovens, or microwaves, as excessive heat can cause serious damage.

Handle your hearing aids with care when removing them to avoid moisture damage or mechanical breakage. If any parts become loose or damaged, contact the service center for repair.

When holding your hearing aids, grasp the main body—not the volume control—to prevent damage.

Keep hearing aids and accessories out of reach of children.

During humid seasons, store your hearing aids in a sealed container with a moisture-absorbing agent or use a UV-C dehumidifier and sterilizer for optimal protection.
